Rosewood Delivers Strong Showing at 2A East Regionals with Multiple State Qualifiers
Rosewood turned in an impressive performance at the NCHSAA 2A East Regional track and field championships, with the Eagles finishing fourth overall in the boys standings and eighth in the girls standings while producing several podium finishes and likely state qualifiers.
The Rosewood boys totaled 53 team points, trailing only Tarboro, Lejeune, and John A. Holmes in the regional meet. The girls squad added 33 points to place eighth in a competitive field led by Lejeune and Pamlico County.
Leading the way for the boys was Michael Vaughn, who captured a regional championship in the shot put with a throw of 45 feet, 2 inches. Vaughn also added a 12th-place finish in discus at 113-5.
Rosewood’s boys also found success in the jumping events. Ty McCrae earned regional runner-up honors in the high jump after clearing 5-8, while Jason Pickard placed second in the long jump with a leap of 19-6.
On the track, Jaylin Cooper and Montavion Jones delivered major points in the hurdles. Cooper finished third in the 110-meter hurdles finals in 16.29 after running a 15.58 in prelims, while Jones placed fourth in the finals at 16.30 following a prelim time of 15.81. Cooper also claimed third in the 300-meter hurdles at 42.59, with Jones finishing fourth at 44.62.
Rosewood’s relay teams also contributed valuable points. The boys 4x100 relay team placed fifth with a time of 45.18, the 4x200 relay finished seventh in 1:35.92, and the 4x400 relay took eighth in 3:53.70.
Distance runner Nick Wilson added points in two events, finishing eighth in the 1600-meter run at 5:19.58 and ninth in the 3200-meter run at 11:46.41.
For the girls, Thu Min turned in one of the top all-around performances of the meet. She placed third in both the 300-meter hurdles (53.12) and triple jump (31-2), while also earning fourth in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 18.59 after qualifying through prelims at 19.09.
Rosewood’s girls relay teams also scored well. The 4x400 relay team finished third in 4:37.80, while the 4x200 relay team took fourth at 1:53.94.
Valleigh Collins placed sixth in the 200-meter dash at 28.38, and Navasia Dixon added a sixth-place finish in the 400-meter dash with a time of 1:05.12.
In the field events, Jenniyah Wright earned an eighth-place finish in shot put at 27-1.5, while Alexis Mooring placed 10th in discus with a throw of 67-3.
The strong regional showing capped off an impressive season for Rosewood track and field, with multiple athletes now expected to compete at the NCHSAA 2A State Championships.
