Johnson’s six touchdowns snap Parrott’s streak against Wayne Christian
KINSTON — Urban Johnson stepped in at quarterback and changed the recent history of the series, accounting for six touchdowns as Wayne Christian defeated Parrott Academy 42-7. The Patriots had won the previous five matchups.
Johnson, filling in for Wayne Christian’s injured quarterback, completed 8 of 9 passes for 138 yards and a touchdown while rushing for 150 yards and five scores. The Eagles led 7-0 after the first quarter, stretched the margin to 28-0 by halftime and took a 42-7 lead into the fourth quarter.
Wayne Christian coach Daniel Pugh said the Eagles needed to control the game physically.
“We had to play clean and physical football. It was a little sloppy early, but we just had to trust our training,” Pugh said.
Parrott forced an early fumble, but Wayne Christian responded by forcing a turnover on downs and took control from there. The Eagles forced multiple turnovers and kept the Patriots from getting back into the game.
Wayne Christian continued to lean on its running game, wearing down Parrott with repeated carries. Johnson finished the night as the Eagles’ leading rusher, while Drake Lane added 50 receiving yards.
“It was amazing. We’ve been practicing all summer long, building that true team chemistry. Urban was always determined to do whatever he could for the team,” Wayne Christian senior Devin Davis said.
Johnson also connected with sophomore receiver Wilder Phillips for a 48-yard touchdown. Parrott’s lone score came on a 46-yard run by Cole Watson, who finished with 77 rushing yards.
“It was unbelievable, but I can’t take all the credit. Without the line, I couldn’t do it,” Johnson said. “I told the boys all week that Parrott was going to bring it. I knew if we were the more physical team, we would win, and tonight it showed who was more physical.”
The victory gave Wayne Christian a season-opening statement after Parrott had controlled the recent series. Wayne Christian will host Bear Grass Charter next Friday, while Parrott Academy will host Harrells Christian.
