C.B. Aycock earns first win with 7-2 victory over Goldsboro
PIKEVILLE — C.B. Aycock rebounded from its season-opening defeat with an 7-2 win over Goldsboro on Thursday, securing the Lady Falcons’ first victory of the year.
The Lady Falcons were dominant at the top of the singles lineup. Kannyn Fail cruised past Goldsboro’s No. 1 player 6-0, 6-0, while freshman Mallorie Spriggs followed with a 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 2 singles.
Abigayle Abrams contributed a 6-4, 6-0 victory at No. 3 singles. Emma Keim, also a freshman, earned a 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 5, and Torrianna Coley posted a 6-0, 6-0 victory at No. 6. Allison Alexander rounded out the singles wins with a 5-0 result at No. 7.
Goldsboro’s lone singles win came at No. 4, where C.B. Aycock senior Lexie Valdiviezo dropped a hard-fought three-set match, 7-5, 1-6, 10-6.
“It was great to get our first win on Thursday,” C.B. Aycock coach Donald Clark said. “Goldsboro has a very scrappy squad, and the matches in the middle of the lineup were very competitive.”
In doubles play, the Lady Falcons added two more wins. Fail and Spriggs dominated at No. 1 doubles with an 8-0 victory, while Abrams and Coley also won 8-0 at No. 3. Goldsboro picked up the No. 2 doubles match, defeating Caroline Howell and Coley 8-2.
The victory came just three days after C.B. Aycock opened the season with an 8-1 loss to Felton Grove on Monday.
The Lady Falcons’ lone win in that match came from Abrams, who rallied for a 4-6, 6-0, 10-8 victory at No. 3 singles.
With several new players in the lineup this season, Clark said the team is still building chemistry but showing promise early.
“We have four new starters this year, including two freshmen, so it’s going to take a while for us to jell, but this is a talented group,” Clark said.
They play again against Hunt today at 3:30 at home.
