Eastern Wayne turns turnovers into rain-soaked shutout at CB Aycock

PIKEVILLE — In a physical, rain-soaked game where neither offense found a consistent rhythm, Eastern Wayne made the decisive plays on defense, turning two CB Aycock fumbles into touchdowns in a 14-0 victory over the Falcons.

The Warriors led 7-0 at halftime and extended the margin to 14-0 in the third quarter. Neither team scored in the fourth.

Zion Evans’ scoop and score was the turning point for Eastern Wayne. Zymiere Clark also had a touchdown reception for the Warriors, who entered the game 2-0 after beating Goldsboro 77-0.

CB Aycock, which came in 1-1 after a 20-0 win over Rosewood, held the edge in the series over the past five meetings, 3-2. The Falcons’ defensive backfield limited Eastern Wayne’s passing attack for most of the game, but the two turnovers proved costly.

“We have got to be able to run the ball to be successful,” Coach Zietlow said.

The conditions played a role throughout the night, with rain falling for most of the game. Both teams leaned into a physical style, but scoring chances were limited.

“It’s not a game we were satisfied with,” Coach Oats said. “We left a lot of points on the field.”

Ultimately the defense showed out. Only allowing 13 passing yards on 13 passing attempts and 61 rushing yards on 27 rushing attempts.

Eastern Wayne travels to Deep Run to play South Lenoir next. CB Aycock has a bye week before facing Goldsboro in two weeks.
