Goldsboro girls basketball overwhelms Eastern Wayne, 60–6
Goldsboro wasted little time asserting control Tuesday night, rolling to a 60–6 road win over Eastern Wayne on the Warriors’ home floor.
The Cougars (16–2) scored 20 points in the opening quarter and followed with 25 more in the second to build a commanding 45–3 halftime lead. Eastern Wayne (2–16) went scoreless in both the first and fourth quarters as Goldsboro controlled the tempo from start to finish.
Eight different Cougars found the scoring column, led by Dezarae Thompson, who poured in all 13 of her points in the first half, including three 3-pointers. Aziyah Boyer added 10 points, Imari Buckom knocked down two triples and finished with eight points, while Kennedy Barbour and Alyssa Brown chipped in eight points apiece.
The win marked Goldsboro’s eighth straight victory since a 56–50 loss to Wilson Prep and its third consecutive win over Eastern Wayne, despite the Warriors holding a 23–14 edge in the all-time series across 37 meetings.
“I thought we came out and executed,” Goldsboro head coach Khadijah Bryant said. “We stayed with the game plan and got off to a good start.”
Thompson said her early scoring surge came down to confidence and trust.
“I just play like myself,” she said. “My coach told me to step up, and I stepped up.”
Despite Eastern Wayne’s struggles this season, Bryant said the atmosphere reflected the history between the two programs.
“Eastern Wayne and Goldsboro go way back, so we knew it was going to be packed and loud,” Bryant said. “It was a great playoff environment, a great environment to come into, get a win, and make things happen.”
With the postseason approaching, Bryant emphasized that the Cougars are still focused on improvement rather than results.
“One thing about me, we’re always going to keep finding things to work on,” she said. “Even though we’re a week or so away, we’re going to continue to refine things, get our kinks out, and be prepared to face whoever we have to face.”
